Making Great Hiring Decisions
Making Great Hiring Decisions turns approved criteria and independent interview records into a structured debrief, while leaving every employment decision with an authorized human.
A hiring debrief is an evidence review, not a vote on who feels familiar. Useful records separate observations from interpretation, map evidence to approved job-related criteria, preserve counterevidence, and keep missing information visible. Personality impressions, affinity, appearance, protected traits, family or medical information, and vague culture fit do not belong in the decision record.
This playbook prepares a debrief packet, records an outcome already made by an authorized human, or audits the process. It does not make a hire, no-hire, ranking, compensation, or employment decision. It does not invent evidence, contact anyone, update an applicant system, or claim legal compliance.
The artifact can improve the evidence. It cannot inherit the authority to decide someone's employment.
ROLE Operations analyst CANDIDATE IDENTIFIER C-17 APPROVED CRITERIA Analytical problem solving, partner communication, reliable execution AUTHORITY Hiring manager makes or defers the decision by September 12. STATUS Evidence packet only. No employment decision has been made.
ANALYTICAL PROBLEM SOLVING Supplied evidence: Work sample matched anchor 4. Limitation: One stated assumption was omitted. PARTNER COMMUNICATION Supplied evidence: Two anchor 3 records and one anchor 2 record. Conflict: The anchor 2 record cites a vague escalation example. RELIABLE EXECUTION Evidence: Missing. This is not a negative rating.
DEBRIEF SEQUENCE 1. Restate the approved criteria and human authority. 2. Review analysis evidence and its limitation. 3. Place the communication records side by side. 4. Keep execution evidence marked missing. 5. Ask the decision owner to decide or defer. CONSENSUS Not required. Evidence-based dissent remains in the record.
HUMAN DECISION Pending authorized debrief. REFERENCE PLAN Draft questions only after the debrief identifies a job-related claim to validate. EXTERNAL ACTIONS No candidate contact, evaluator contact, reference contact, publishing, or applicant-system update. PROCESS QUESTIONS Route privacy, restricted-information, retention, or policy uncertainty to authorized people or legal review.
